CIRCUIT SCHEMATICS AND SIMULATIONS

This is our first attempt to simulate the 24 volt to -48 volt converter. The specification sheet requires a negative output voltage for the operation of certain telecommunications equipment in a cellular base station manufactured by Motorola. However, this simulation had several problems and needed to be revised once again.

Notice how this circuit now has an inductor with dual coils (an isolation transfomer). The primary coil will charge up with energy thanks to the switching action of the transistor. When the switch is off, the energy will be transferred to the secondary coil twice as fast, thus providing the load with twice as much voltage. Observe that the diode is now allowing the flow of current in the counter-clockwise direction through the load (because a negative output voltage is required).
