Overview:

Switching DC/DC converters use fixed-frequency clocks whose duty cycle varies as a function of input voltage and load current. For properly designed modular DC/DC converters, the min./max. duty cycle information is not relevant to most applications. If one is already set up to measure input inrush or ripple currents, it is simple to observe and calculate the converter duty cycles to verify proper functioning.

Procedure:

To determine the minimum duty cycle, set the input voltage and the output current to Vin (max.) and Iout (min.), respectively. The minimum duty cycle is determined as the ratio of the time during which the input current increases to the total period of the input current ripple. To determine the maximum duty cycle, set the input voltage and the output current to Vin (min.) and Iout (max.) respectively. The maximum duty cycle is determined using the ratio of the time during which the input current increases to the period of the input current ripple.
